That grinding sound when you brake — what it usually means
Plain-English guide to brake noises: what's urgent, what can wait, and why we always look before we quote.
Brakes can make all sorts of sounds. A light squeal when cold is often just dust or moisture. A grinding or metallic scraping that happens every time you brake is different — it usually means the friction material has worn down and metal is contacting metal.
What that means: the pads are likely down to the backing plate, and the discs are probably being scored. The longer it continues, the more metal-to-metal wear happens, which turns a pad replacement into a disc replacement.
This cannot be confirmed online — it needs a proper look. If braking feels weak, pulls, or makes a deep grinding sound, arrange an inspection as soon as possible. If you ever feel the vehicle is unsafe to drive, stop driving when safe and arrange a tow.
Our promise: we check first, photograph what we find, explain it in plain English, and only do work you approve.
The fastest way to certainty is a proper look. Book in and we'll confirm it for real.
